They all have four wheels, get you from point A to point B, and require regular maintenance. But does the type of engine under the hood actually change how you should care for your vehicle? Petrol Engines: The Familiar Standard

The petrol engine in a hybrid requires standard maintenance: oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, and coolant. However, because the electric motor assists the engine, the petrol engine often runs less frequently and under less stress than in a traditional vehicle. This can actually extend engine life and reduce some maintenance needs.
But hybrids add new components to maintain. The battery cooling system needs attention, though it typically requires minimal maintenance beyond occasional inspection. Brake fluid should be changed regularly, even though the brakes themselves last considerably longer thanks to regenerative braking that uses the electric motor to slow the vehicle.
Here’s something many hybrid owners don’t realize: letting a hybrid sit unused for extended periods can damage the high-voltage battery. These batteries need regular use to maintain health. If you’re planning to store a hybrid for months, specific procedures should be followed.
Hybrid-specific maintenance is generally minimal, but when hybrid components fail outside warranty, repairs can be expensive. The good news is that modern hybrid systems are proving remarkably reliable, with many high-mileage examples demonstrating excellent durability.
Fuel System Considerations
Petrol and diesel vehicles have different fuel system maintenance needs. Petrol systems benefit from occasional fuel system cleaners to remove deposits, though modern top-tier fuels often include sufficient detergents. Diesel systems are more sensitive to fuel contamination and may benefit from fuel additives, especially in cold climates where fuel gelling can occur.
Hybrids face a unique challenge: if the petrol engine runs infrequently, fuel can sit in the tank for extended periods. Most hybrid systems periodically run the engine to consume old fuel, but it’s still wise to avoid letting fuel age excessively in the tank.
The Cost Reality
Generally speaking, diesel maintenance costs slightly more than petrol due to specialized fluids and more robust components. Hybrid maintenance costs are comparable to petrol vehicles for routine services, but specialized hybrid repairs require trained technicians and can be expensive.
However, reliability matters more than routine maintenance costs. A reliable diesel might cost more to maintain but last twice as long. A hybrid might save you thousands in fuel costs that offset any additional maintenance expenses.
