What Engine Oil Actually Does

Most people think oil’s only job is lubrication, but modern engine oil performs multiple roles inside your engine.

First and foremost, it reduces friction. Metal parts inside an engine move extremely fast. Pistons travel up and down thousands of times per minute, while bearings and camshafts rotate continuously. Oil creates a thin protective film between these surfaces, preventing metal from grinding directly against metal.

Oil also helps remove heat. Engines generate massive amounts of heat during combustion and oil helps carry some of that heat away from critical components.

Another important function is cleaning. Oil collects microscopic debris such as carbon particles, dust and metal wear fragments. These contaminants are then trapped by the oil filter instead of circulating through the engine.

Corrosion protection is another benefit. Additives within the oil prevent rust and protect internal components from chemical reactions caused by combustion gases.

What Happens When Oil Gets Old

Fresh oil is carefully formulated with additives that enhance its performance. Over time, those additives begin to break down.

Heat, pressure and contamination slowly change the chemical structure of the oil. Instead of flowing smoothly, old oil becomes thicker and less effective at lubrication. Dirt particles and combustion by-products also accumulate.

Once the oil loses its protective qualities, friction increases. That extra friction means higher temperatures, faster wear and reduced efficiency.

The first number represents the oil’s performance in cold temperatures, while the second number reflects its behaviour at operating temperature. Choosing the correct viscosity ensures that oil flows quickly during cold starts while still providing strong protection when the engine is hot.

Fresh oil maintains its designed viscosity far better than old oil. When oil breaks down, it may become too thin or too thick, both of which reduce its ability to protect moving parts.

Sludge: The Enemy Inside Your Engine

One of the biggest risks of neglected oil changes is sludge formation.

Sludge is a thick, sticky substance formed when degraded oil mixes with contaminants. It can accumulate inside the engine and restrict oil flow to critical components.

Restricted oil passages mean certain parts of the engine may receive less lubrication, which accelerates wear. In severe cases, sludge can block oil pickup tubes and lead to catastrophic engine failure.

When Should You Change Your Oil?

Modern engines and synthetic oils can often go longer between oil changes than older vehicles. Many manufacturers recommend intervals between 10 000 km and 15 000 km, depending on the engine and driving conditions.

Vehicles that frequently operate in heavy traffic, extreme heat or dusty environments may benefit from more frequent oil changes.

Checking the oil level and condition regularly is a good habit. Dark oil is normal after some use, but thick, gritty or sludgy oil is a clear sign that it is time for a change.

Engine oil might not be the most glamorous part of vehicle maintenance, yet it is one of the most important. Fresh oil protects vital engine components, improves efficiency and extends the life of your vehicle.
