Your car can parallel park itself, warn you about vehicles in your blind spot, and connect to your smartphone with the ease of a teenager at a coffee shop. It has more computing power than the systems that landed astronauts on the moon. Yet somehow, it still needs regular oil changes, tyre rotations, and fluid checks – maintenance tasks that would be perfectly familiar to a mechanic from 1975. What gives?
The Laws of Physics Haven’t Changed
Here’s the thing about automotive innovation: we can make engines smarter, more efficient, and cleaner, but we can’t change fundamental physics. Metal parts still create friction when they move against each other. Friction generates heat and wear. Lubrication reduces both. This hasn’t changed since the first internal combustion engine sputtered to life over a century ago.
Your car’s sophisticated direct-injection turbocharged engine still relies on oil to keep metal surfaces from welding themselves together at high temperatures. All the sensors and computers in the world can’t eliminate the need for that slippery barrier between moving parts. They can tell you when the oil needs changing with remarkable accuracy, but they can’t make the change unnecessary.
Rubber Still Deteriorates
Modern tyre technology is genuinely impressive. Today’s tyres offer grip levels that would astonish drivers from previous decades, they last longer, and they’re quieter. But they’re still made primarily of rubber compounds, and rubber has an unfortunate relationship with time, UV radiation, and ozone.
This means tyres still need proper inflation, regular rotation, and eventual replacement – regardless of whether your vehicle can navigate rush-hour traffic autonomously. Brake Pads Are Still Consumables

Modern vehicles might monitor filter conditions more accurately and extend service intervals, but they can’t eliminate the need for filtration. Your car’s computer can do calculus; it can’t make dirt magically disappear.
Coolant Chemistry Hasn’t Been Revolutionized
Engines still generate heat – enormous amounts of it. Even the most efficient modern engines convert only about 40 percent of fuel energy into motion; the rest becomes heat. That heat needs to go somewhere, which is where coolant comes in.
Modern coolants last longer than the green stuff from decades past, often remaining effective for five years or more. But coolant still degrades, additives deplete, and the system still needs attention. Your engine might be turbocharged and direct injected with variable valve timing, but it still needs proper cooling, just like a Model T Ford did.
Why This Actually Makes Sense
Here’s the silver lining: these old-school maintenance basics are well understood, relatively affordable, and widely serviceable. Imagine if every aspect of car maintenance required specialized diagnostic equipment and factory-trained technicians. Basic maintenance remains accessible because the fundamentals haven’t changed.
Modern technology has made vehicles more reliable, efficient, and capable than ever before. But it hasn’t eliminated the need for basic care – it’s simply extended service intervals and made monitoring easier. Your sophisticated modern vehicle still needs the same fundamental attention that cars have always required.
Think of it this way: you might own a smartphone, but you still need to charge it, clean the screen, and protect it from damage. Progress doesn’t eliminate basic maintenance; it just changes how often and how conveniently we perform it.
So yes, your car can practically drive itself to the service centre. But once it arrives, someone still needs to change the oil, rotate the tyres, and check the brakes. Some things never change – and that’s actually reassuring.
